This painting is of James Fisher JP who was Mayor of Barrow-in-Furness (1902–1903). James Fisher was originally a grocer and he took over from his Uncle Thomas as H. W. Schneider’s shipping agent. He also began to build up his own fleet for the iron ore trade. His company, James Fisher & Sons, still thrives today (2012).
