Francis Newbery was an influential artist and art educationist who, as headmaster/director, led the Glasgow School of Art from 1885–1918. He was responsible, in part, for the appointment of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as architect of the School's new building that was finally completed in 1909. Newbery was well connected amongst the artistic elite in Glasgow and Scotland but also across Europe. The sitter in this painting was a pioneering Scottish-born photographer and master photogravure printer whose own artistic reputation would have been recognised by Newbery.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
