The sculpture depicts James Cook, aged 16 years old, looking towards Staithes where, according to tradition, he first felt the lure of the sea. The statue was unveiled by Captain Chris Blake who was Master of HM Bark Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook's ship. The artist worked from a portrait of the adult Captain Cook to visualise how the young Cook might have appeared. Cook's boyhood home in Great Ayton was dismantled and shipped to Melbourne in 1934 where is was rebuilt.
