English Heritage has commissioned a series of portraits depicting six historic figures from the African diaspora whose stories have contributed to England’s rich history. Each artist has been supported by our curators and historians to creatively portray their subject.

James Chappell was a black servant at Kirby Hall from 1672 when he was 15 years old. During his time there, Chappell saved Kirby’s owner, Sir Christopher Hatton IV, from an explosion and on Sir Christopher’s death in 1706, James was presented with an annuity of £21 a year. With this money, James set up home in the local area with his wife.
