Displayed in the Dining Room at Kinloch Castle, this portrait of James Bullough, father of John and grandfather of Sir George Bullough, is one of a pair, the other being of his wife, Martha. James Bullough was born c.1799. At the age of seven he was working by candlelight as a handloom weaver. He was a gifted child and was soon applying his inventive skills, in conjunction with the new power source steam, to revolutionise an industry. By the time he was 18, the first steam power looms were being introduced. In 1856 James Bullough joined forces with John Howard in the manufacture of cotton spinning machinery. James’s youngest son, John, joined the firm in 1862, and following the early death of Howard in 1866, became sole owner of the business.
