This is an early portrait of the Irish painter James Barry (1741–1806), noted for his historical paintings, painted while he was studying in Rome, and attributed to the French painter Louis Gabriel Blanchet, who was active in Rome. Blanchet won second place in the Prix de Rome competition in 1727 and thereafter settled in Italy, he is known for his portraits of the exiled Stuarts.
