Elected after John Hopkinson, Ewing held the Professorship from 1890 to 1903. He resigned to become the Director of Naval Education at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. During his tenure, Ewing established the Department in Free School Lane and consolidated the Workshops as an essential component of students' training. Ewing, his wife and children took a holiday in Switzerland with Hopkinson and his family in August 1898.
