This painting was a copy by Branwell Brontë of a print published in a magazine of 1830 called 'The Literary Souvenir'. His teacher William Robinson of Leeds set him to produce it as an exercise, and the general muddiness of the colour shows how difficult it was for Branwell to translate the magazine's monotone picture into colour. The story depicted is from the Bible (Genesis 28: 10–22), where Jacob, asleep in the desert, dreams of a ladder ascending into heaven, and 'the angels of God ascending and descending on it'.
