Jacob Atherton started the BICC with his brother and was also involved in other entrepreneurial activities such as speculating on the retrieval of sunken cargos and organising (or being part of) the collection of businessmen who bought up SS Great Britain. He bought and lived at Hurst Park at Huyton and developed one of the first golf courses there, where the Prince of Wales came to play. He was close friends with Lord Derby. He bought the Lancashire Tallow and Fat company for his sons to run although they were not very successful! He would have been knighted except for the scandal of the litigation from an American Company claiming the brothers had infringed copyright. He hired the famous lawyer Rufus Isaacs to defend their case, but mud sticks, so no title.
