This is the final painting in a sequence of nine pictures of 'Jack's Trip Ashore'. These were painted on board the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS 'Victorious' around 1960 and depict a sailor of the period spending a free evening ashore. Having set out clean and sober, Jack visited a pub for a few beers and then a strip club - where he drank more. Next he shared yet more drinks with a lady, before joining in a rowdy drunken sing-song with his mates. Arrested for being drunk and incapable, he was arrested and spent the remainder of the night in a police cell. Hungover, he has been taken back to the ship and disciplined. His shore leave has been cancelled and he ends up mournfully swabbing the deck.
