Jack Carnew's pigeons won the 'Best Average' prize for endurance flying during the 1923 season and again in 1925. The inscriptions show his flying times had increased since 1923. Tipplers were flown in 'kits' of three, as here, and Andrew Beer painted accurate portraits of the individual birds. Beer worked as a commercial artist in Bristol and was a racing pigeon enthusiast in his spare time. In the 1920s and 1930s he painted many portraits of pigeons, which were often sent by rail to Stapleton Road Station to pose in his studio at Eastville.
