The nudity of the female in this intimate scene of a couple in a dingy interior seems to be somehow unremarkable. However, the juxtaposition of clothed man and naked woman was shocking to the English pre-war audience. In his 'domestic conversation pieces' Sickert often explored the psychological relationship between a man and woman, imbuing it with a sense of apathy, conflict or exhaustion. He was interested in the compositional problem of placing two figures at right angles. The head of the clothed man is cropped and all attention seems to be concentrated on the woman's body. Sickert has used a wide range of tones of paint to render the effects of light on her flesh. The rough, textural handling of paint is typical of Sickert's highly original approach to oil painting, while the treatment of light and shade illustrates his debt to Edgar Degas.
