Isabel Wilson qualified in medicine at Edinburgh University in 1921. Her career included mental hospital work and research into insulin coma treatment in schizophrenia and cardiazol-induced seizure treatments. In 1931, she became a Commissioner on the Board of Control, the central government body which managed the mental hospitals. When the Board was disbanded in 1960, she transferred to the Ministry of Health as a principal medical officer. From 1962–1963 she was president of the Royal Medico-Psychological Association, the predecessor organisation of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
