This portrait of Newton is a copy of one painted in 1689 by Sir Godfrey Kneller, which is owned by the 10th Earl of Portsmouth. This copy was painted by Barrington Bramley and donated to the Institute by the Director, Sir Michael Atiyah, who unveiled it at the opening in July 1992. It shows Newton at the height of his scientific acumen, before he went to London to take charge of the Mint.
