The artist was a pupil of the academic painter Lehmann, but turned his attention to less elevated themes. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1848. However, his is best known for his numerous prints, winning the medal for engraving at the salon in 1866 and 1869.

In this work an old lady sits on a chair eating from a bowl beneath a narrow window in a small room. She wears a white cap and apron and around her are the articles of domestic life. Much of nineteenth-century genre painting took its inspiration from seventeenth-century Dutch paintings of tavern scenes and simple domestic interiors. In France these small, intimate paintings became fashionable decorative pieces which were extremely popular.
