De Witte’s first dated church interior, the painting depicts the north transept and choir of the Oude Kerk in Delft, seen obliquely from the south aisle of the nave. In accordance with Protestant teaching, the bare white interior of the church focuses attention upon the minister, the only active figure, preaching from the pulpit to a large congregation. The simplicity of the interior emphasizes the quality of stillness created by the artist, where the descending daylight suggests the attentive congregation’s communication with the heavens. The picture is an excellent example of De Witte’s masterly ability to create convincing illusions of space and light.
