This painting shows the west view of the interior of Rotherham Parish Church. Another of Cowen’s paintings, 'Chapel in the Oak', is on display at Clifton Park Museum, and has a very similar composition where the viewers’ eye is drawn through the picture to the light at the centre of the painting.

From humble beginnings Cowen became a drawing master in Sheffield. Here he attracted the attention of Charles William Wentworth, 3rd Earl Fitzwilliam. The Earl became Cowen’s patron, funding trips to the continent.

Cowen first exhibited his artwork in 1811 at the Society of Artists. His paintings and the many prints made from them, proved popular throughout his lifetime and beyond.
