This painting was formerly attributed to Adriaen Brouwer, the painter of low-life tavern scenes of extraordinary vigour, vulgarity and sensitivity. However, a group of paintings has been identified that are clearly by a follower of Brouwer having in common prominently placed jars, as in this work. The delight with which the artist so easily rendered the rounded form of the largest jar is also seen in the abstraction of the figures, particularly in the form and shape of their various hats. Five of the foreground peasants are singing lustily and largely toothlessly, a sixth sleeps and the seventh looks knowingly at the spectator, drawing you into the scene. The unknown artist was not an imitator of Brouwer but an inspired follower with an independent talent.
