The scene shows the gloomy interior of a Gothic church. At the far right, a gentleman in a pink cloak dips his fingers into a holy-water stoup. In the foreground are two beggars, one of whom leans against a column. The other, wearing a yellow cloak, sits on some steps and stretches out his hand to a man nearby. At the far left, another figure sits on a stone bench, his face hidden beneath his hat. In a crossing of the church, a priest says Mass before an altarpiece representing 'Christ at the Well' (or 'The Woman of Samaria').
