Interior of a barn with an old woman seated at a distaff. In the centre of the composition, the woman sits beside a sleeping child on the ground to her right. In the background, there are two men; one sits on a chair, the other leans over, talking to the seated man. In the foreground to the right, a single hen pecks at the ground, and close behind, a man walks up a flight of stairs. To the far left, is a doorway; an item of clothing is draped over the bottom half of an open barn door. The inside of the barn is littered with straw, and around the scene, a barrel, wodden ladders, shovels, a jug and wicker baskets are visible amongst the activity.
