Six sketches mounted together and used as a book illustration in \'Journal and Drawings\'. Five of the sketches are of nude male figures, miners, washing, sitting or posing on a table and chairs. Objects on the tables include a jug, a bowl, a kettle, a teapot, a cup and saucer and lemons. Three of the figures pose with their elbow resting on a raised knee. These figures occupy a dark room with either a candle or shafts of light through a window. The other drawing is a portrait of a young man with a broad nose. The drawings are accompanied by notes on visual characteristics of the scenes. The eight sketches were mounted on a single piece of paper with a date and notes written in the intervening spaces.
