Vanessa Bell was part of the Bloomsbury Group – a group of artists and writers who lived in the Bloomsbury area of London. The group also included her sister, the writer Virginia Woolf and artist Roger Fry. This painting of a view from a window is one of Bell's later works. The vase of flowers sits on the border between the house and the garden. The main motif is of a landscape, seen through the open window of a domestic room, it is a motif which recurs throughout her paintings.
