The painting shows soldiers travelling in the back of a Mastiff, the six-wheeled, heavily-armoured patrol vehicle, used by the British Army in Afghanistan. With the permission of the Ministry of Defence, Jules George spent several weeks of February 2010 in Afghanistan, embedded with the British Army. He based this painting on his own experiences. On one occasion, his patrol engaged in a three-hour firefight (the subject of another National Army Museum painting, 'Between 9 and 12:15, 20th February 2010 (C Squadron Household Cavalry Regiment, Fire Support Group)'. When the vehicle eventually prepared to move off, the artist asked what was happening, were they retreating – to which he got the terse answer, “We are withdrawing. We don’t retreat.
