Taking as a starting point the residents’ dining tables from the old Royal Infirmary, McMullan has focused on the notion of displacement.
At the end of their term of residence, clinicians, scientists and scholars (including the celebrated Louis Pasteur, whose groundbreaking discoveries in microbiology included the development of pasteurisation), would carve their names into the surface of one of these tabletops.
Mcmullan was fascinated by the simple markings and the strong sense of belonging and place that these inscriptions convey. She asked the staff of the old Royal Infirmary one question: 'What lasting memory or impression of your old workplace would you like to take with you to the New Royal Infirmary?' The answers she received are embedded in the artwork installed along this corridor.
