The sitter was the first son of Philip IV of Spain and his second wife Mariana of Austria to survive infancy. He suffered from a number of conditions and died, following a severe epileptic attack, just before his fourth birthday.

The original of this portrait dates from 1659 and is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
