This sudden combat of the owl and the hare takes place at twilight in a quiet Wiltshire landscape. In many of the artist's earlier landscapes there had been a psychological tension between the human figures, which is here replaced by a very different kind of mood and drama. This haunting and powerful image may reflect the anxiety in the artist's personal life at the time. His fascination with earlier British painting, particularly the 1930s, is also evident.
