In the 1920s and 1930s the artist paid a series of visits to the island of Barra and it is likely that his path crossed with those of the writer, Sir Compton Mackenzie (1883–1972) and the folklorist, John Lorne Campbell (1906–1996), both of whom settled on the island in 1933 and who in their different ways studied Hebridean life and culture. The artist's painting presents life at Castlebay and combines clear reportage with a strong, decorative line.
