As in other paintings, Nash depicts an arcadian world of social harmony, with people working effortlessly. Although the harvest of apples is under way, nobody seems to be working. It might be a picture of a game or a scene of leisure than real work. The dappled light and the patched application of paint, which Nash normally used in his paintings, reinforce the effect of unreality.
