In March 2003 the 1st Battalion took part in the American-led invasion of Iraq. As an armoured battlegroup it was at the forefront of the fighting to capture Az Zubayr, followed by Basrah. This developed on into counter-insurgency and peace-making operations until the Battalion was withdrawn in June 2003.
