In May 1941 Malta was under siege by the Germans. The Royal Navy assisted supply convoys to the island, and ferried aircraft. Operation Tiger, depicted here, was a major British operation to take tanks to Egypt and reinforcements to the RN Mediterranean Fleet, as well supplies to Malta. The artist is believed to have been in HMS 'Edinburgh', a Royal Navy cruiser on convoy escort duty.
