A stone memorial tablet to brothers Doctor William Hunter and Doctor John Hunter who were born at Long Calderwood in 1718 and 1728 respectively. There is a relief carving of three figures: on the right is a naked pupil receiving instruction from his teacher, an old man who stands before him pointing to a page in an open book; on the left a female figure, semi-naked, reaches out for the Light of Knowledge. Between them is a bronze plaque with an inscription and at the base is another inscription. William left his specimens, books, manuscripts, coins, art, and ethnographical collection to the Glasgow University – what is now the Hunterian Museum. John left another vast collection to the Royal College of Surgeons in London.
