Described as an ardent Welshman, Humphrey Humphreys was an active church reformer. He rebuilt the deanery and reorganised the diocese at Bangor, supported the activities of the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge in North Wales, and worked to win back dissenters to the church. He was an acknowledged antiquarian, deferred to by historians and heralds of the College of Arms. Humphreys was educated at Bangor, Oswestry and Jesus College, Oxford, where he became a Fellow. Ordained a priest in 1670, he took on several parishes in Caernarvonshire and Flintshire. He became Dean of Bangor Cathedral in 1680 and was consecrated Bishop in 1689. Humphreys married the daughter of Robert Morgan, Bishop of Anglesey. He was moved against his wishes to Hereford in 1701 and died there in 1712.
