This painting is badly fire and water damaged. It shows Act IV, Scene 1 from Shakespeare's 'King John'. It illustrates the boy Prince Arthur, Duke of Bretagne, pleading with Hubert de Burgh who has been sent by King John to burn out the boy's eyes. The artist was originally commissioned, with other contemporary artists from 1786, to create images of Shakespearean scenes by William Boydemm, a wealthy publisher. This is a later version.
