HRH the Duke of Connaught (Prince Arthur, 1850–1942), was born at Buckingham Palace on 1 May 1850, the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He had a distinguished career as a soldier and a diplomat and between 1911 and 1942 served as President of the Society, receiving the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce's Albert Medal in 1931 'in grateful appreciation of his Presidency of the Society since 1911'. This portrait was the last to be painted of him and was the last work completed by the artist Philip de László. It was painted at the request of the Society's Council and presented by the artist to the Society. A copy of the portrait was subsequently made for the Royal Empire Society.
