In 1949 HRH Princess Elizabeth became an Honorary Member of the Company and on her accession to the throne she became the Company's first Patron. This portrait was to be hung in the central position in the hall of the Company's building in Hanover Street. It was decided that she should be shown in the robes of the Order of the Thistle, Scotland's Order of Knighthood, but wearing a tiara rather than a plumed cap normally worn with the robe. The background was to be the interior of St Giles Cathedral but this has been freely interpreted by the artist.
