Prince George (1902–1942), Duke of Kent, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1939 to 1942. A portrait commemorating the Duke of Kent as Grand Master was considered by the United Grand Lodge of England in 1939. Its commission was delayed because of the outbreak of the Second World War, and the Duke of Kent was then killed in an aeroplane crash in 1942. However, the artist Simon Elwes, who had been a wartime patient at the Royal Masonic Hospital at Ravenscourt Park, London, allowed the United Grand Lodge of England to acquire this relaxed portrait from his own collection.
