Howard Robertson (1888–1963) was the first true Modernist to become President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1952–1954). Born in Utah of an English father and American mother, he was brought up in England and studied architecture in London and Paris. He published during the 1920s and 1930s several books on Modernism, although the building of his best known to Londoners, the Shell Centre on the South Bank (1961), would hardly suggest its architect had Modernist credentials. In the 1930s, he designed three much-published pavilions for World’s Fairs, at Brussels (1935), Johannesburg (1936) and New York (1939).
