For two years from 1937 Hodgkins had lodgings in 'Sea View', a farmhouse in Worth Matravers, Dorset. The house and dairy farm opposite appear in several works of the period. Hodgkins wrote to Rée Gorer, the mother of her friend, the writer Geoffrey Gorer 'I have taken two rooms at a Farmhouse where I shall stay as long as it suits me – It is close to the sea, that is 1 mile down & 5 miles up … I mean to stay quiet & wait for the impulse …'
