An internationally renowned artist, Paolozzi trained at Edinburgh College of Art and The Slade, London. The influence of Dada and Surrealism can be clearly seen in his sculpture, within the overall pop idiom of his own generation of British pop art. His work draws on both contemporary material culture through industry and the mythology and motifs of classical Greece and Italy. His work is complex and eclectic in its references, much of it derived from the increasing prevalence of technology and mechanisation from the 1950s.

The concrete original of this work is dated 1947, and it was cast in bronze in 1974.
