The artist was a student at Tamworth Art School.

The painting remained unfinished due to the outbreak of the First World War. Sergeant Leon Stretton, part of the 1st/6th North Staffordshire Regiment, died at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, aged 27. He is commemorated on the Fazeley Village War Memorial in Tamworth.
