The painting shows the Horizontal Mill, St Mary's Church and a cottage running left to right across the picture, with a field in the foreground. There is a hill in the distance that would be on the Chelsea side of the Thames. The painting is identical to, and presumably a copy of, an illustration entitled 'Old Battersea Mill, about 1800', which appears in the book 'Old and New London' by Edward Walford, published in 1875.
