Figures in a desolate landscape. In the foreground, on the right, are three women and two children. The woman on the right, wearing a white cap, sits and weeps; the woman in the centre of the picture looks back at their caravan on fire, while a young girl hides in her mother's skirts. The third woman, barefoot, carries a large bundle of linen, snatched from the blaze. In the bottom-left corner is a pile of rescued furniture; there are some chairs, some linen, a jug, and so on.
