The work is a depiction of an intimate moment experienced by the Holy Family. The Christ Child reaches out his arms to Mary and Joseph, who look at Him fondly; Mary's mother, St Anne, is also included in the left background. In keeping with tradition, Joseph is shown as an old man, of a similar age to Anne.
