Commissioned by the Warrior Preservation Trust, this painting commemorates the tenth anniversary of the return of HMS ‘Warrior’ to Portsmouth in June 1997 after restoration in Hartlepool. The painting depicts Princess Alexandra of Denmark’s journey to England to marry the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. Travelling from Antwerp to Gravesend on the Royal Yacht, she was escorted by the HMS ‘Warrior’ and the Channel Fleet. It was after this journey that ‘Princess is much Pleased’ was engraved onto the ship’s wheel on the order of the First Captain, Arthur Cochrane. The oil painting can be seen on board the HMS Warrior 1860. Renowned for his paintings of historic ships, Smitheman’s marine works are held in public and private collections in the UK and abroad.
