This painting is of HMS 'Victory', anchored off St Helens, Isle of Wight upon her return to England 4th December 1806, having sailed from Gibraltar on 3rd November after a temporary refit following the damage she received at Trafalgar. Vice Admiral Nelson's body is aboard, preserved in a coffin made of part of the mainmast of the French Flagship 'L'Orient', which blew up at the Battle of the Nile. HMS 'Victory' remained at St Helens until preparations for the state funeral has been completed, when she sailed for Sheerness.

After the Battle of Trafalgar 21 October 1805, HMS 'Victory' arrived in Portsmouth with the body of Vice Admiral Viscount Nelson on 4 December 1805. The ship was escorted back by HMS 'Belleisle' and HMS 'Bellerophon'.
