World War I. This is the Royal Navy cruiser HMS 'Royalist', painted by a member of her crew. The ship is pictured with a platform built over the front gun turret, for aircraft to take off. The Royal Navy built these platforms on several of its large ships, so that aircraft could be used for reconnaissance. From high in the air, the pilot and his observer could see further than anyone on board ship. The aircraft in the painting is possibly a Sopwith 1½-Strutter.
