Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was Colonel-in-Chief of The Black Watch from 1937 until her death in 2002. During her 65 years of service she enjoyed a close relationship with the Regiment.

Painted at Lynford Bridge and completed in 1940, this portrait merited coverage in the Singapore newspaper 'The Straits Times'. Although the exact circumstances of this unusual commission remain to be ascertained, the choice of a Polish artist at this particular time is fascinating. Within a year of the German invasion and occupation of Poland, there was a conspicuous presence of Polish refugees and service personnel in Scotland and a Polish art exhibition was staged in Glasgow. The Regiment's selection of the artist was probably also influenced by the fact that it had previously commissioned a posthumous portrait of George V as Colonel-in-Chief from him.
