The Pipes and Drums would have been in Edinburgh as part of the Military Tattoo.

The artist is known for his lively depictions, often used in postcards. Many of Leigh's postcards were displayed in the window of a particular shop in Edinburgh. The painting was given as a gift by the grateful artist to the shop owner's wife.
