Peter Lanyon's work was the result of his personal experience of landscape although at first glance his paintings appear to be abstract. He spent most of his life in Cornwall and was particularly inspired by the wild coastline which runs from St Ives to Land's End. In 1959 he took up gliding in order to see the land from above and the swooping forms of 'High Moor' reflect this new interest. He died as the result of a gliding accident, when his mature painting style was gaining increasing international recognition.
