This portrait is loosely based on Holbein’s Whitehall fresco depicting the first two generations of the Tudor dynasty. The imposing frontal image of Henry VIII was imitated in numerous portraits. Our picture shows the king in a three quarter length format but is similar to the half-length portrait in the Royal Collection in pose and costume details.
